U19s forward Fope Deru was delighted to find the back of the net twice in their opening game of the season at St. George’s Park on Saturday afternoon.

Deru scored twice for the Young Terriers in their first league game of the season against Burton Albion at St. George’s Park.

The 17-year-old spoke about how that started his season and improved his confidence, especially with it happening at the home of England.

“It was a really good feeling for me on a personal note.

“This season, I really want to work on goal scoring and goal contribution, so to score two in the opening game was a real confidence booster.

“Obviously, playing at home and playing away is good, but when you get the chance to play at St, George’s Park, you really have to grasp that opportunity because it doesn’t happen that often.

“I think it was really good for the team to be able to play there.”

Deru went on to discuss how the squad played as a whole, making sure to address the assists he got from Michael Parker.

“Me and Michael have a really good friendship on and off the pitch.

“We get on well, so I think when we’re playing, we just know where each other are for us to pick each other out.

“We showed real togetherness in our performance for the first game of the season, we had players come off the bench that worked just as hard as the players who played the full game.

“I think just working hard for each other is what got us through the whole game.”

The forward also took the time to highlight his aims and ambitions for the 2022/23 season.

“This season I really want to work on pushing through and getting to the B Team.

“I want to work on myself as a player, my overall game, and hopefully just get as many opportunities as possible to play in the B Team.”
