Huddersfield Town Head Coach Carlos Corberán praised the mentality of his players after a superb away performance saw them record a 2-0 win at fellow Sky Bet Championship promotion contenders Middlesbrough.

Goals from Naby Sarr and Jordan Rhodes, who both came into the side for the game, secured a first ever win for the Club at the Riverside Stadium, and Carlos was delighted that his side’s hard work brought about just rewards.

“I think the team worked really, really, really, hard – and well – to achieve these three points,” Carlos told HTTV post-match.

“In defence, we were very concentrated to stop them, because we knew how difficult it would be to come here, away, to play against a team with very good players. I think the strong mentality of the players, from the goalkeeper to the striker, was massive. It helped the team to achieve the deserved win today.”

Carlos switched the shape of his side to a 3-4-3, with Ollie Turton playing at centre back, to try and negate Boro’s threats.

He continued: “We came here today to win the game. We believed we could defend and cover better with a line of five. Turton came here in a good condition today, and that’s why he played as a centre back alongside Tom Lees and Naby Sarr.

“We always have to understand the needs of the game, but every time we enter the football pitch, we want to win the game. You can win by trying to dominate the ball in attack, but we didn’t think today was the day (for that). To get something here we had to defend really well and use our moments in attack, especially the counter-attacks. For me, today, we had many chances on the counter-attack, and set piece situations that could be important for the team too.

“It’s important to grow as a team – to keep working and improving our mentality. Today I watched the team play the game with a very strong, good mentality and character, and understanding exactly the needs of the game.”

Although the Spaniard was delighted with every player who got on the pitch, he reserved special words for Rhodes after an assist and a goal for the front man.

“The contribution of Rhodes today was massive. I didn’t see any bad performances in the team, but it is true that when the opportunity arose for Rhodes to be in the first 11, he showed he was ready to help the team.”

The only downside from the 90 minutes was a knee injury sustained by Sorba Thomas, which rendered him unable to play in the second half.

On Sorba’s injury, Carlos commented: “We don’t know yet – I need to wait. The medical advice today was that he couldn’t perform in the second half, so we brought on a player with a similar profile in Koroma as we wanted fast players on the side to counter-attack today.”

The 1,629 Town fans in attendance in the North East can continue to dream as they head home, but Carlos won’t change the goal for his players:

“Every time we are on the football pitch, we need to try and go for the three points. The more time we add the three points, the better position we will be in the league. That is our very ambitious target. We won’t change that mentality.”
