The Blue & White Foundation was set up at the start of the 2003/04 season, as a way of allowing fans to contribute to their Club and its Academy after administration. Reminiscing on the 2003/04 campaign, Worthy admitted that although very early on in his career, it was one of his favourite seasons.

“It seems a long time ago now!

“It was definitely one of the best seasons in my career. It ended in promotion and I played with a group of really good people.

“I think the only thing for me was that it was only my second full season, so at the time I thought that was the norm!

“I thought getting promotions was common, and looking back you realise it was a quite a special thing and that not every player gets to experience promotion and very few get to experience more than one.

“In hindsight, it really was fantastic.”

Town’s Academy players stepped up to help the First Team that season, and Worthy commented on how important opportunities like that are for Town’s youngsters.

“Football is about opportunity.

“The way that that situation played out at the time gave a lot of players opportunities.

“I think it was probably quite a unique situation, but those are the situations we try and prepare our players for.

“It’s slightly different, but they get those exposures through loans and different types of games.”

Town’s B Team Manager was 20 at the time, and admits that the influence of the older players was a crucial part of the Terriers’ success.

“I was young at the time, and as a young player you go into games with no fear, you just want to enjoy the experience.

“We had some experienced professionals – Steve Yates, Ian Hughes, Ian Gray – they were really good characters and had a calming influence and understanding of the whole situation that I appreciated at the time.”

Worthy went on to discuss why the introduction of Blue & White Foundation was an important moment for the Club, and still is.

“Everyone had seen the danger of potentially going into liquidation and actually losing the Club.

“That’s the kind of supporters that Town have got.

“They got behind the team and tried to support them in any way they could.

“The loyalty of the fans is fantastic, alongside their understanding and help to support the Academy.

“It’s fitting that a lot of the players during that 2003/04 season came through the Academy and the fans helped that squad to mix in with the other players and get that promotion.

“It’s fantastic that it’s been going for so long and is still helping the Academy.”

Wednesday 3 November 2021 will see Worthy reunited with some of his teammates, and former manager Peter Jackson.

“It’s always nice to see people that you’ve had fantastic experiences with.

“I’ve seen some of them more recently, but you’ll find that you bump into a player that you’ve had an experience with and it’s like you’ve never been apart from them.

“I think that’ll be the case and I’m sure we’ll have a few stories to tell and a good laugh.”
