Huddersfield Town Women beat Sir Tom Finney Ladies 20-0 in the First Round of the Vitality Women’s FA Cup to progress through the competition.

Huddersfield Town Women scored 20 in a First Round FA Cup tie to send them through to the Second Round. Sir Tom Finney Ladies had reached this stage in the competition for the first time in their history and put in a valiant performance against a team three divisions above them.

Town created chances from the start, and they took these excellently with Lucy Sowerby and Serena Fletcher scoring in the opening moments. Just before the quarter of the hour mark, Fletcher had a shot that was deflected off Ria Montgomery and into the back of the net.

Following the third goal of the game, Town continued pressing, with Isabel Thompson in the Finney goal making consecutive great saves to stop chances from Beth Ibbotson and Sowerby.

Shortly after the half an hour mark, Sowerby made a pass into the middle of the box to find Brooke Marsden, whose shot into the back of the net made it four. Before long Town scored again, with Sowerby turning scorer once again to make it five.

Following the fifth goal Town had two chances from Fletcher and Vicky Abbott, with both shots rattling the crossbar. Again, moments later, the Terriers had another chance that was cleared off the goal line.

As the game was approaching the break, Marsden scored again as her shot was saved by Thompson, before the ball fell back to her feet in time to find the back of the net. Minutes later, on the stroke of half-time, Fletcher doubled her tally to end the half on a high.

At the break, Town made three changes, with Devs players Alice Linsell and Kayley Hird joining the game alongside Autumn Housley as Georgia Marshall, Serena Fletcher and Beth Ibbotson made way.

Town were not about to stop looking for more goals in the second half and in the opening few seconds Thompson made a great save to deny the Terriers. However, minutes later, Sowerby scored her third of the afternoon to bag her first hat-trick of the season.

Marsden also secured her first three-goal haul of the season moments later, before substitute Linsell found the back of the net. Sowerby did not stop once she hit three and shortly after scored her fourth goal of the game.

As Town continued to push forward, the goal tally continued to rise.

Huddersfield Town Women’s next game is against AFC Fylde at the Stafflex Arena on Wednesday evening, which will be new manager Glen Preston’s first game in charge since re-joining Town Women, replacing Steve Appleton.

In a statement released on their website, Town Women announced:

“Huddersfield Town Women FC confirms the departure of First Team Manager Steve Appleton with immediate effect. The Club wish to thank Steve for his efforts in the role and wish him all the best for the future.

“We are pleased to confirm the appointment of Glen Preston, former manager of Guiseley Vixens, as he returns for his second stint in the role at HTWFC.”
