On this day, Huddersfield Town secured promotion to the second tier after a tense 8-7 victory on penalties over Yorkshire rivals Sheffield United at Wembley Stadium in the 2012 League 1 Play-Off Final.

After beating Milton Keynes Dons in the Semi-Finals, Town arrived at Wembley Stadium ahead of the Club’s first ever visit to the renovated home of the national side.

The match itself was a close affair, but the tie headed for extra-time and then penalties after neither side could take one of their chances.

It looked as though it wasn’t going to be Town’s day as Tommy Miller, Damien Johnson and Alan Lee missed the first three spot kicks for Simon Grayson’s side.

Fortunately for Town, Sheffield United also missed three of their first four spot kicks, which were succeeded by eight successive converted penalties for the Terriers.

The responsibility of the decisive spot kick fell to Sheffield United goalkeeper Steve Simonsen who then fired his effort over the crossbar to ensure Town clinched promotion from League 1.
