Christopher Schindler reserved a heartfelt goodbye for everyone involved with Huddersfield Town.

The 31-year-old defender calls time on his five-year spell with the Club this summer after playing a vital part in some of the Terriers’ biggest moments in recent history.

Moving from TSV 1860 Munich back in 2016, Schindy admitted he never expected to have the success he did at Town and that it’s an adventure that he or his family will never ever forget.

“In the life of a football player there’s always going to be changes. Speaking honestly, when I arrived here five years ago, I never thought I’d be here for five years.

“Since I first joined the Club, it’s been an unbelievable journey for me with some unbelievable highs and a fair share of struggles. As in football, as in life, this is what it’s about, to get through these difficult moments.

“For me and my family, it’s been a hell of a ride and we will never regret this step or being here for so long. This place is special for us.”

Due to injuries and COVID-19, Schindy and his family haven’t managed to say goodbye to the Huddersfield Town supporters, and, in many ways, his time with the Club doesn’t have the ending it deserves.

But when speaking to #HTTV, Town’s two-time Player of the Year winner left a special message to the supporters.

“The most frustrating part is that this doesn’t fit the journey I had here. I would’ve loved to have one more game in front of everyone and said my goodbyes but yeah, I guess we are all in the same boat.

“When David was in, we had a very energetic way of playing football, so it was easy almost for the supporters to buy into it and make it so hard for teams to come to our place. They made it a fortress because there was energy on the pitch and energy on the stands; that was too much for some teams. They played a big part in our promotion season.

“In the second year, everyone was so excited, when we got out the team bus, people waiting, cheering, wanting signatures; you need to appreciate that and embrace it as a football player.

“Even the year after, you could still feel that people were enjoying it. Halfway through the season, you knew that we wouldn’t survive in the league, but people would appreciate it if we gave our best.

“These supporters here are something special. We created a special bond with them, and it was always going to be a good relationship. I’ve never seen this kind of ruthless support even if it’s difficult.

“All I can say is thank you to everyone. Not only me, but my family too, when I was around my family, they respected my space. I can only speak really highly of everyone and I’d like to thank everyone for supporting me and making me feel welcome.

“On behalf of the team also for sticking with us. No-one knows what would’ve happened without this support.”

The defender now classes Huddersfield as his second home and believes his bold decision to come here, and make the move to England, was one of the best he’s ever made.

“Sometimes in life you make decisions that you’re scared of; this was one. I had never left my boyhood club and we moved to a new country. As a family, we were struggling in the first year, but also as a family this was a very important step in our lives. No-one knew we’d be on this unbelievable ride.

“We are settled and five years ago, I would never ever have thought, I’d of thought of this place like I do now.

“A big part of this is the football club, the people I work with every day and the people around, the supporters. You can feel it’s very honest, hard-working and I love that.

“It’s great we had this unbelievable journey together and most-definitely I consider this my second home.

“When Hoggy has his testimonial in two years, he invited me! I will definitely come back here for the memories sake but also because we have friends here and because this place is very special to us!”
