Young Terriers showcased work in training

- Huddersfield Town Under-17s faced Scunthorpe United
- Neo Eccleston on target for the Young Terriers
- George Danaher pleased with side’s performance

Huddersfield Town’s Under-17s showcased their problem solving on the pitch as they went up against Scunthorpe United on Saturday morning.

Town began the game well, with the first chance of the game falling their way. Robson Shipley collected a ball from Donay O’Brien-Brady and took a shot at goal which was met by Neo Eccleston. However, the ball went over the crossbar.

The visitors instantly responded to the threat and took the lead in the 17th minute when their left-back was able to slip the ball past the left of Michael Roxburgh.

Scunthorpe built of the momentum of their goal and doubled their lead 20 minutes later. Roxburgh had comfortably saved the initial shot, but one of their midfielders was able to hit in the rebound.

The Young Terriers were able to get themselves back into the game just before the half time whistle thanks to Shipley and Eccleston pairing up once again. Shipley crossed the ball to Eccleston, who’s initial shot bounced off the left post, before he was able to hammer the rebound into the top of the net.

The second half brought with it plenty of chances for both sides, but unfortunately it was the visitors who took the only goal of the half with Scunthorpe’s left-back collecting his brace.

Overall Under-17s Coach George Danaher was pleased with his side’s performance.

“I thought the game was good.

“It provided the players with a good challenge in terms of trying to break down a team who pressed aggressively in the first half and then dropped back in the second. This meant that the players had to problem solve on the pitch, which I thought they did very well!

“At times we created some excellent moments from their problem solving.”

Danaher was also particularly pleased with the Young Terriers’ goal.

“In training recently we’ve been looking to get the wing-backs into effective areas to cross the ball.

“What was great about our goal was that we scored it from the opposite wing-back being inside the box at the back post.

“It was really great to see that the players had taken that into the game.”

The youngsters are back in action on Tuesday 10 March 2021 when they host Mansfield Town at Canalside. Danaher says his side will continue to work on the ‘Terriers Identity’ ahead of it.

“We’ll review this game ahead Mansfield on Tuesday.
“Tuesday is another opportunity for us to put in another ‘Terrier’ performance, which should consist of high energy and enthusiasm, something that is a must to match the identity of the Club.”
