SHIRT TALES: TOWN’S ICONIC NUMBER 3s

7 June 2021

A look back at notable figures Town players who wore number 3

- Squad numbers were introduced during the 1999/00 season
- Harry Toffolo currently wears the number 3 shirt
- Paul Dixon also wore the shirt for a number of seasons

The number 3 shirt has been typically worn by left-backs since permanent numbers were introduced ahead of the 1999/00 season.

Keeping with that trend, the shirt is currently held by left-back Harry Toffolo, who joined the Club in January 2020 from Lincoln City when the Cowley brothers were in charge. Since joining the Terriers, the left back has made 51 appearances and has scored three goals.

Before Toffolo joined the team, the shirt number hadn’t been used since the 2017/18 season when Scott Malone joined the Premier League side from Fulham, where he also held the number 3 shirt. Malone played with Town for the whole 2017/18 campaign which consisted of him making 22 appearances for the Terriers.

The shirt number was also assigned to Australian international Jason Davidson in the 2015/16 season. The left back, who currently plays for Korean side Ulsan Hyundai, made 27 appearances for Town and scored one goal.

Paul Dixon wore the number for two seasons starting from the 2012/13 campaign. Huddersfield Town had just won promotion to the Championship after the memorable penalty shoot out against Sheffield United. Paul Dixon made 85 appearances during his time with the Terriers from 2012 until 2015 when he joined Dundee United.

Scottish international, Gary Naysmith, also wore the shirt for two seasons starting from the 2010/11 season. Naysmith, who is now the manager of Edinburgh City, made 36 appearances for Town while wearing the number 3 shirt.

Prior to Gary, the shirt was worn by Joe Skarz in the 2007/08 season – when he was just starting his senior career after going through the academy with Huddersfield Town - and Danny Adams in the 2005/06 season as well as the 2006/07 season.

Defender Anthony Lloyd wore the shirt in the 2004/05 season in the beginning of his senior footballing career after going through the academy at Huddersfield Town.

Gareth Evans was the second player to permanently wear the number 3 shirt for Town after joining the Club in 2001 from rivals Leeds United.

The first man to wear the number 3 shirt was Jamie Vincent. He was at Town for two seasons and made 59 appearances and scored one goal.
