Family members of Huddersfield Town’s 1922 FA Cup winning side were invited down to the John Smith’s Stadium to take a look at the Club’s home kit for the upcoming Sky Bet Championship campaign.
The 2021/22 home kit pays tribute to the side that lifted the major trophy for the first, and only time, in Huddersfield Town’s history.
So, to pay tribute to those players, their names have been etched into the inner neck of the jersey, which emulates the kit worn on that historic day 100 years ago.
Family members of Ernie Islip, Clem Stephenson, and Billy Smith were invited to the home of the Club to get a first look at the new kit and to give their thoughts on it.
Jimmy Islip - Great Grandson of Ernie Islip
“It’s amazing to be able to see the new shirt and the images of my Great Grandad. When I got the call to come in, I was really touched; it was an emotional moment.
“I’m very proud that a relative of mine achieved such things playing for Huddersfield Town, our family’s hometown team.
“To see Islip in the back of the shirt is amazing. I remember being a kid in the 80s sat in the stand and people still knew that name and had seen him play, and this is another chance for the name to live on in association with the Club.”
Teddy Islip - Great Great Grandson of Ernie Islip
“I like my Great Great Grandad because he played football for Huddersfield Town. My Great Great Grandad won the FA Cup in the Final and I’m very proud of him.”
Clem Stephenson - Grandson of Clem Stephenson
“I’ve got clipping of papers of what the reporters said about him. Herbert Chapman sent him a glowing letter about him. He was a smiler; I’ll always remember that. I have very fond memories of him.
“I think it’s brilliant that his name is in the shirt, really great. It always pleases me when I see memories of him, and see that other people have good thoughts about what he did.”
Robert Smith - Grandson of Billy Smith
“It’s an emotional moment, I’m very proud. The team that won the FA Cup and the leagues is incredible. For my Grandad to score the winning goal, it’s the icing on the cake.
“My first game was in 1967 and we’ve followed the Club through thick and thin. We’ve had highs and lows, but the Club means so much to us.”
Liz Smith - Granddaughter of Billy Smith
“I think it’s fantastic to see all the names on the shirt. It’s a very proud moment for the family.
“I absolutely love the kit and I hope everyone else does too. I’m really proud that he holds the record for the most appearances at Huddersfield Town and I don’t think anyone will every beat that record!”
Mollie Smith - Great Granddaughter of Billy Smith
“I love the kit! I’m really proud of Billy and he’s inspired me to play myself. I’ve been playing for 10 years and he’s my inspiration.”
