20-year-old joins the Young Terriers
- Jon Russell signs for the Huddersfield Town B Team
- Midfielder signs contract running until 2023
- Former Chelsea man played for Accrington on loan last season
We’re delighted to announce that midfielder Jon Russell has today joined the Huddersfield Town B Team squad!
The 20-year-old arrives in West Yorkshire as a free agent, having ended a 13-year stint with European Champions Chelsea at the conclusion of last season.
He’s put pen-to-paper on a contract running until the summer of 2023, at which point we have the option of a further year’s extension.
Standing at 6’ 4” tall, London-born Jon is a central midfield player who made 26 appearances on loan at Sky Bet League 1 side Accrington Stanley last season, scoring twice. That experience added to five previous senior appearances for Chelsea’s Under-23 side in what is now known as the Papa John’s Trophy.
Town’s Head of Football Operations Leigh Bromby explained:
“We’re very happy to welcome Jon to the Club today. He’s a very interesting player who offers different qualities to the squad, and we believe there is still a lot that we can work with him on to help him improve.
“From speaking with Jon, it became really apparent just how much he wanted this opportunity; he has a huge desire to be here. That’s a great starting point for any player, and the main quality we’re looking in for our First Team, B Team and Academy players.
“I’m excited to see how Jon progresses working under Jon Worthington in the coming months.”
