Jon Worthington reviews Middlesbrough draw

- Worthy praised both collective and individual performances

Jon Worthington believes that his side played excellently as Huddersfield Town Under-19s drew 2-2 with Middlesbrough at Rockliffe Park.

Town twice fought back from behind to come away with a respectable draw against Boro, with goals coming from Brahima Diarra and Jaheim Headley.

Worthy praised the Under-19s’ display, as well as lauding his side's mentality to come from behind and equalise on two separate occasions.

“I thought the performance was excellent - both collectively, and individually,” he commented.

“I thought we played with real energy and enthusiasm, and I thoroughly enjoyed the game.

“I thought we dominated the ball and I thought we did more than enough to win the game.

“We created a lot of opportunities in the final third and on another day if we had been a little bit more ruthless, we would have won.

“That is the only negative to the performance, that they were not quite as ruthless enough to score a few more really.

“Mentality is massive in football and the demands that us as a Football Club, and us as coaches, have on them is high.

“They have got to be strong mentally and in this match they showed that they are really good characters.”

The attacking side to Town’s play was superb, creating a vast amount of chances and were unlucky not to get the win in the second period.

Worthy, however, applauded the defensive aspect to the Young Terriers’ performance.

“We collectively defended well as a team in terms of the fundamental things that you would want as a team.

“I thought Mustapha Olagunju and Loick Ayina created a great partnership as a back two as well.”

Headley had an excellent performance against Boro, attacking down the left channel with poise and intent.

It was his impressive strike which tied the contest in the second half, weaving in between several players before rifling an effort under the goalkeeper.

His virtuoso display from left-back was something that Worthy particularly picked out as impressive.

“Jaheim was excellent today, he’s a very talented player in my opinion.

“He plays in the structure of the team and he attacks and defends with a real threat at times.”
