Huddersfield Town Head Coach Carlos Corberán was disappointed to come away empty handed against Reading at the John Smith’s Stadium.

The Terriers’ five game winning run came to an end in 2021 after a second half comeback from the Royals.

After the game, Corberán analysed the defeat.

“We wanted to start the year in the right way, and we arrived with the idea to win this game with the mentality to do it.

“The team started the game really well but little by little they started to miss some moments that made us feel uncomfortable in defence, which didn’t allow us to press and recover the ball in the offensive half.

“They had a lot of the ball but didn’t create many chances because we were very concentrated in the low moments and with our midfielders. They had a very clear chance at the end of the first half from a set piece situation.

“I think the start of the second half, we had the feeling that we would counter them again. Before they scored their goal, we had an option in a counter-attack to further unbalance the game, with one recovery on the left side, but we didn’t find the finishing action.

“After we couldn’t unbalance the game, they draw, and we couldn’t find the action to defend the result and then to protect one draw and try to unbalance the game for us.

“After they scored one very good goal, in front of our line of defenders, this is one situation we need to defend better. We need to avoid this without any kind of doubt.

“At the end, in the last minutes of the game we have another clear chance with Mbenza that we couldn’t finish. We made some wrong decision that didn’t allow us to unbalance the game.”

Town took the lead after just six minutes, but didn’t then control the game like Corberán desired. He detailed what his side needed to do differently.

“When you score in the first minutes of the game, you can never be thinking to protect the result. You need to attack more.

“In the first minutes of the first half, we had the game under control because we were playing in the offensive half.

“We need to continue learning. One of the keys to the game is to defend well, but at the same time you need to continue doing the things that by playing in the offensive half, seeing where our advantages are and finding solutions to have control.

“You need to use the speed, go and create chances. In these moments we didn’t interpret the actions.

“We couldn’t defend a result, which was under control from an organisational point of view.”
