- Coach George Danaher says there’s a lot his side can take from defeat

Huddersfield Town’s Under-17s continued their work on the create phase against Grimsby Town at Canalside on Tuesday afternoon.

The create phase has been the main focus of the Young Terriers during their last few fixtures, looking at receiving in good areas and forward runs from attacking players.

Grimsby started the brighter of the two sides, with two chances in quick succession being easily met by Nicholas Bilokapic.

Town’s first chance fell to Evander Grubb, who collected a ball from Michael Stone, but shot across the mouth of the goal.

The visitors took the lead in the 33rd minute. They were awarded a free kick following a tackle on Jaz Goundry, and Josh Smaller slotted the ball past Bilokapic.

Grimsby went on to double their lead five minutes later with Smaller bagging a brace with a powerful header.

When the match resumed after the half-time whistle the visitors picked up from where they left off, scoring in the 51st minute thanks to Luis Adlard.

Town responded well, with Conor Falls forcing Pat Boyes into a diving save.

The Young Terriers continued to search for a way to bring one back, but Grimsby netted their fourth goal of the game in the 82nd minute when second-half substitute Harry Milnor slotting the ball into the bottom left corner.

Speaking after the game, Under-17s Coach George Danaher was quick to comment on what his side can take from the defeat.

“There’s loads to learn. I think the game was good because it offered new challenges.

“Grimsby put the ball in the box a lot and they were really good on set pieces. You get set pieces all the time in the Championship, so that’s something for us to deal with and work on a bit better next time.

“I thought there was some really good individual performances.

“I think that’s what the programme’s about, it’s about getting individuals into the First Team and I think on the whole some individuals performed to a really high standard, so I was pleased with that.

“In the second half we tried to play to our style, which I think you’ve got to be really brave to do that and it’s a really risky way of playing, but you get really good outcomes from it.

“The players were really brave in the second half to try and play the way we want to play.”
