Huddersfield Town Under-17s midfielder Brodie Spencer believes the exposure to experienced players in training is helping him deal with more physical opposition.

The 16-year-old Northern Irishman signed for Town’s Academy as part of the Club’s summer 2020 and has continued to impress since his arrival, seeing him frequently play for the Under-19 side, despite being one of the youngest members of the group.

The Northern Ireland Under-16 international credits the inclusion of the Young Terriers’ training sessions at Canalside.

“I think the work we do at the training ground helps to prepare us for physical opposition because we are always playing with older and more experienced players,” Spencer told htafc.com.

“We are always exposed to these types of players and encouraged to play a certain style of football which is aligned to the First Team. It helps us learn how to deal with physical opponents.”

Spencer played the full 90 minutes in the Under-19s’ defeat to a strong Fleetwood Town side in Lancashire on Wednesday afternoon.

The versatile youngster was utilised in central midfield – a position he has experience of playing – despite being deployed predominantly as a right-back for both the Under-17s and Under-19s this season.

“Before I came to Huddersfield, I used to play in midfield so it was nothing new, but it felt good to play there again and get on the ball.

“It’s very different from playing right-back; you need to be switched on and be aware of what’s around you.

“I think in possession we played well considering we were playing against tough opponents. It was an experienced team we played against, so it was a tough test for us.”

Looking ahead to Town’s next fixture, Spencer pinpointed a couple of the areas the Young Terriers are continuing to work on.

“I think we need to continue to work on the way we transition because a few times we got caught on the break.

“We need to make sure everyone knows their roles when we’re on the attack and find the right balance behind the ball.”

Brodie and the Under-17s return to action on Saturday 13 February 2021 when they take on Mansfield Town at Canalside.
