Huddersfield Town’s Young Terriers were narrowly beaten by Blackpool at a very wet Bloomfield Road on Thursday evening, exiting the FA Youth Cup in the Third Round.

Despite Town’s best efforts, Jonny Johnston’s 25th minute header proved enough to see the hosts through to the next round.

The game got off to a slow start, but soon sprung into life as Michael Acquah was called into action after eight minutes to stop Johnston.

Town began to bring some pressure themselves with a couple of threatening balls into the box, but the home side were on hand to clear the ball.

However, it was the hosts who opened the scoring on the 25-minute mark. Johnston reached highest to latch onto Zack Littler’s delivery and give Blackpool the lead.

Moments later, Conor Falls managed to create Town’s best chance of the half, as he struck an effort just wide of the post after a fantastic delivery from Neo Eccleston.

The Young Terriers managed to get more of a foothold in the game towards the end of the first half, but couldn’t quite find the breakthrough they needed.

The home side started the second half on the front foot and forced Town’s keeper into two fine stops in quick succession.

Town had a chance to level the scores in the 59th minute. Cian Philpott did magnificently to skip past his man, but saw his cross put behind by Michael Fitzgerald. Unfortunately, the following corner came to nothing.

Acquah was called into action on several more occasions, including a BIG stop in the 61st minute to deny Johnston his brace.

Moments later, Blackpool had a big opportunity to double their lead. Thankfully, Luke Mariette struck the post!

Town’s first real chance of the second half came in the 76th minute. Sonny Whittingham connected well with Fope Deru’s pullback, but Blackpool’s ‘keeper pushed it wide!

The Young Terriers created another chance moments later as Fopefoluwa Deru met a cross at the far post but could only slice his effort wide as Town pressed on for an equaliser.

Town continued to apply the pressure as the game went into added time, but the home side defended well to seal their victory and edge the Young Terriers out of the FA Youth Cup.
