Centre back arrives as a free agent
- Huddersfield Town signs Tom Lees
- Centre back signs an initial two-year contract
- Comments from Head Coach Carlos Corberán
Welcome to Huddersfield Town, Tom Lees!
The centre back signed his contract after completing a medical late this week, joining as a free agent on a two-year deal. The Club also has the option of extending the contract into the 2023/24 season in due course.
Standing at 6’ 1” tall, Tom brings a wealth of Championship experience to our ranks, with nearly 400 of his 500 career appearances coming in the second tier.
Since making his Championship debut in 2011, the 30-year-old has made at least 30 appearances a season across the second tier and cups; that's 10 consecutive campaigns.
He arrives at Town as a free agent, having departed Sheffield Wednesday at the conclusion of the 2020/21 Sky Bet Championship campaign.
Head Coach Carlos Corberán explained:
“It is another positive step that we can welcome Tom into our Club today.
“Tom is an experienced centre back, with many games in the competition under his belt. He adds to our knowledge of the division in our back line, which is always a good thing.
“We also know he is a really good character to add to our dressing room, and he is another important option ahead of the new league season.”
Head of Football Operations Leigh Bromby added:
“We are constantly assessing the needs of our squad and Tom’s arrival gives us another Championship-ready option. We know he is another great addition to the changing room and his experience will offer a lot to us over the coming months.
“His arrival also gives us the opportunity to look for high-quality loans for some of our younger centre backs who are on the fringes of the First Team squad; the players who would not start every week for us, but whose development would really benefit from a full season of competitive football.”
