14 August 2021

Terriers fall to defeat against Fulham

- Huddersfield Town beaten 5-1 by Fulham
- Fulham reduced to 10 men late in the game
- Matty Pearson on the scoresheet

Huddersfield Town fell to defeat in their second Sky Bet Championship game of the new season.

Three first half goals saw Fulham leave Town with plenty of work to do in the second 45, before they sealed their win with a further two.

Fulham came out of the blocks fastest, forcing Ryan Schofield into a superb save in the second minute. Josh Onomah sent an effort from 20 yards, but Schofield got across in time to claw the ball out of the bottom left corner.

Town responded instantly, with Duane Holmes testing the visitors' ‘keeper. Unfortunately, his shot was pushed behind.

The Terriers, and their supporters, thought they’d taken in the lead when Matty Pearson drilled an effort home. However, the assistant had his flag up!

It was Fulham who opened the scoring in the ninth minute. Sorba Thomas overhit a back-pass and in his attempt to keep it in, Schofield’s clearance hit a sliding Mitrovic.

Schofield produced an excellent stop moments later, getting low to save a powerful volley from Mitrovic.

The offside flag was up again as the clock marked 31 minutes of play. This time, it was for Fulham, ruling out Mitrovic’s second attempt at a brace.

Onomah got his goal to double the Cottagers’ lead, getting the final touch on a Fulham corner.

Sorba Thomas showcased his excellent corners once against as the clock continued to count down to half-time. This time, it was Pearson who rose highest to nod it home, securing his first goal for the Terriers on his home debut!

Fulham responded instantly, reviving their two-goal lead thanks to Fabio Carvalho, who was able to place a pull-back underneath Schofield at close range.

Town made two changes at the break, seeing Scott High and Fraizer Campbell replace Alex Vallejo and Danny Ward.

The substitutions saw the Terriers change their formation to 3-5-2, with Josh Koroma moving to join Campbell up front.

It was a slow start to the second half, with no clear-cut chances.

The first half chance of the side saw Thomas find Koroma on the edge of the box. Unfortunately, his curling effort was straight at the ‘keeper.

Fulham came back with a chance of their own, seeing Harry Wilson’s volley hit the bar after Schofield had saved Carvalho’s initial effort.

The Cottagers went down to 10 men for the final 18 minutes. Levi Colwill was booked for fouling Harry Wilson, who kicked him in return.

The visitors added their fourth goal of the afternoon through second half substitute Cavaleiro, who collected a pass from Seri and lifted the ball over the advancing Schofield.

Thomas delivered two opportunities for Town in the closing minutes. His free-kick was volleyed well over the crossbar by Colwill, whilst his corner saw Hogg head the ball just over the bar.

Cavaleiro got his brace in added time, firing across Schofield into the bottom corner.

The Terriers are back in action on Tuesday 17 August 2021, when they host Preston North End.
