Young Terriers showcased work in training

- Huddersfield Town Under-17s in league action against Mansfield Town
- Young Terriers display problem solving
- Coach George Danaher comments after game

Huddersfield Town’s Under-17s displayed their problem solving on the pitch when they faced Mansfield Town on Saturday morning.

Town got off to a positive start and created an early opening as Evander Grubb tiptoed into the area, but he just couldn’t quite get a strike off at goal before the Mansfield defenders managed to get a toe in.

Mansfield created a couple chances of their own not too long after, but the home side’s efforts wouldn’t result in any danger as Town were able to clear comfortably.

Grubb had another chance in the first half, but his effort was blocked before Mansfield managed to open the scoring. The Young Terriers stood firm at first, but the Mansfield striker hit a volley that left Michael Roxburgh with no chance.

Town created a few more chances in the first half, but efforts from Neo Eccleston and Charles Nduwuisi-Ondo could only go wide of the target not long before the break.

Mansfield came out quickly in the second half and managed to double their lead not long after the restart. The Young Terriers managed to create a few more chances as they pushed to get back into the game, but they just couldn’t find the elusive goal to get themselves back into the game.

The home side went closest to scoring again late on, but a brilliant reaction save from tipping an effort onto the bar kept the score at 2-0.

Under-17s Coach George Danaher was pleased with the challenge Mansfield Town provided for his side.

“I thought it was a good challenge.

“The game provided the players with loads of problems, so it was good to see the players trying to problem solve themselves on the pitch as it’s something which they’re going to have to learn to deal with.

“We’ve done a lot of work on problem solving in the classroom and on the training pitch, but you don’t quite recreate the game environment.”

“I think the key thing is to do it in an emotional state. Admittedly, getting the players try and problem solve when they’re in an emotional state in a game is difficult, but it is something that we’ll keep working on and definitely review and look to try and improve for the next game.”

Town face Doncaster Rovers next Saturday and Danaher is hoping his players can take improvements from the Mansfield defeat into that game.

“We’ll start off by reviewing this game in detail in terms of what we’ve been working on in training and we’ll look to improve ready for the Doncaster game.”

“It will be a good challenge and I’m hoping the players can learn from this game and take the improvements into the next game.”
