Huddersfield Town Women welcome local rivals Brighouse Town to the Stafflex Arena in the Third Round of the Women's FA Cup in the 2pm kick off on Sunday afternoon.
The Terriers go into the tie on the back of 10 consecutive wins in all competitions, having thrashed Stockport County 8-2 last weekend and qualified for the Third Round with a thrilling 3-2 win over Liverpool Feds after extra-time in Round Two.
After a lay-off period of three months due to lockdown, Manager Jordan Wimpenny was impressed at the fitness levels of his players and their current form.
“After only having a couple of training sessions after such a long break going into the game against Stockport, it was really important for us to go out and perform and now we need to take that into the match against Brighouse.”
Sunday’s visitors to the Stafflex Arena boast a number of ex-Town players and staff members, so the Cup tie will have an added edge, especially as a derby. Wimpenny, though, is purely focused on the game itself.
“I know Brighouse will have a game plan. I’ve done some research into how they play, we know a lot of their players and staff, so that helps you prepare and we’re confident that we’ll be able to deal with it on Sunday.
“We know that every Cup game is tough, just look at the Liverpool Feds game and the challenges we faced there. You only get one chance. It’s one game and it’s over, or you can be successful and hopefully we can take the team forward.”
The 8-2 victory against Stockport last time out was the second time that the Terriers have hit eight in 2020/21, the other time being the tremendous 8-1 battering of Stoke City. As well as tightening up defensively, Wimpenny has got his team firing on all cylinders this season. This is certainly something he’s proud of.
“Goals are something that we pride ourselves in because we’ve got a lot of attacking players. (Laura) Elford got a hat-trick (against Stockport) which will help her confidence, but we don’t rely on one player and we take that responsibility as a group to help us be successful.
“We have to see how far we can go (in the Cup). We know that if we get through, we will play West Brom or Derby, but our focus is Sunday and if we win we can then think about the next round.”
Sunday’s game will be shown live on the Club’s ‘HTWTV’ YouTube channel from 1.55pm and Wimpenny signed off his interview by acknowledging the importance of fans being able to watch the game.
“It’s something that we’ve wanted to do for a while now. Thankfully the first run-through went well against Stockport thanks to the hard work of Ollie in the media team. I have to credit them all on their efforts.
“Because fans can’t be at the stadium, it’s vitally important for us to give them the opportunity to watch from home. It’s a great opportunity for us and I hope there are lots of fans tuning in on Sunday.”
Brighouse Town Women come into the game off the back of an impressive 3-0 win over Newcastle United. Three goals in extra-time set up the Third Round tie. They also beat Chester-le-Street in the First Round of the competition.
Brighouse Town Women currently sit second in the Women's National League - Division One table having collected 10 points from five games. Their regular season, like Town’s, was curtailed.
