Huddersfield Town Under-19 winger Will McCamley has seen improvements in his own game since gaining First Team experience with South Shields.

The Young Terrier went out on loan to South Shields at the start of the current campaign. Coincidentally, the youngster joined Town’s Academy from South Shields in March 2019!

McCamley spoke to htafc.com about how his first experience of First Team football has helped him.

“It’s been a really good experience playing against men and playing in games where three points are at stake and people’s livelihoods are at stake.

“It’s a different experience, but it’s good and it’s only helped us.

“You learn a lot from playing against them because you’re playing against people who have been playing for like 20 years, people who are 15 years older than you and are more streetwise.

“It’s really helped me learn different ways to improve as a player.”

The winger got the opportunity to play in the FA Cup First Round with South Shields, something he’s incredibly proud of.

“It was a great experience. We played against a really good Cheltenham team and I learnt a lot playing against an EFL side who move the ball quick and we started hitting them on the counter. I really enjoyed it.”

With COVID-19 putting a halt to South Shields’ fixtures, McCamley is continuing his development with Town’s Under-19s.

“I think I’ve improved in all areas - physically and mentally and technically.

“I think you can only do that by training every day, from the stuff that I’ve been doing in the gym and on the pitch.

“Plus, the other experiences that come with it, like getting to participate in the FA Cup and playing against men and then playing here for the B Team, that can only improve me, and I’ll continue to improve.”

Will and his U19 teammates will be back in action on Wednesday afternoon, when they host Salford City, you can follow live tweets over on Town’s Academy Twitter; @htafcacademy.
