Experienced Derby County U23 side win at Canalside

- Young Terriers given tough test against Derby County
- Kieran Phillips on target again and more minutes for Álex Vallejo
- First of two tough tests this week for Huddersfield Town B Team

A young Huddersfield Town B Team were given a tough test against Derby County on Tuesday afternoon.

Danny Schofield’s side featured a number of Under-19s and Under-17s players, who came up against a Rams side featuring some more experienced players.

The sides shared most of the general play, but Derby showed a real clinical edge to run out as comprehensive winners.

The Young Terriers found themselves a goal down just seven minutes in, when Derby’s striker shot low into the bottom right from outside the area.

However they replied well, taking the game to their opponents, and nearly drew level through Kieran Phillips, who was denied by the ‘keeper twice from close range.

And it didn’t stop there, as the best chance of an equaliser came on the counter attack midway through the half.

Following a Derby corner the ball broke for Matty Daly, who nutmegged his marker to play Myles Bright in on goal. The Young midfielder did well to hold of a defender, but his clever shot was just blocked on the line.

Despite the Young Terriers' good spell midway through the half, they weren’t able to prevent an experienced Derby side from adding to their advantage.

Two swift counter attacks in quick succession resulted in two goals for the Rams, meaning Town would go into the break three goals down.

This wasn’t without reply however, as Daly and Phillips each tested the Rams ‘keeper just before the break.

The Young Terriers came back out with the same intensity that they ended the first half, and were rewarded with a goal almost instantly.

Brahima Diarra's excellent pass allowed Aaron Rowe to skip past his man on the right flank before drilling in a cross to Kieran Phillips, who stroked the ball home with the outside of his foot after getting across the defender at the near post.

The tie was relatively even from then on, with the Young Terriers resilient at the back, battling well in midfield, and getting forward to create chances.

Jacob Chapman also made a number of good saves throughout the half, managing to keep Town in the game on occasion until late on.

It was only in the final 10 minutes that the visitors nailed down the result, scoring twice more before proceedings drew to a close.
