The role as Head of Football Operations differs from club to club, but what does it look like at Huddersfield Town?

Leigh Bromby, who had a 14-year playing career in the top two tiers of English football before moving into coaching and then the Academy Manager role at Town, gave his thoughts on how football has evolved, whilst detailing what his main responsibilities will be in the role.

“The football side has grown so much since I was playing, and over the last 20 years of playing and coaching, the football side has developed into a business.

“My role is to oversee all the departments and make sure the performance of them is at a really high level. The Championship is one of the most competitive leagues, so my role isn’t just recruitment, it’s to make sure we maximise performance in every department; coaching, physical performance, medical and so on. Recruitment is just an arm of what I’ll be doing.”

As Academy Manager at Town, Bromby was a vital strategic lead as the Club transitioned to its new vision of Academy football over the last two seasons.

He explained how that experience, and the ones gained in professional football, will help in the role.

“You look across most the departments that I’m overseeing, and I have an understanding of all of them.

“I’ll have experienced it as a player, as a coach and Academy Manager. When I talk about it, I feel old, but the experience I’ve had is in football and that’s a strength.

“I’ve had to develop in terms of strategy, leadership and management, which is a huge part of this role and I feel comfortable to have an opinion and to help affect all the departments.

“I’m lucky enough to have had those experiences at Huddersfield Town in the Academy Manager role, so hopefully I can use that experience to make an impact at First Team level.”

But how does the Head of Football Operations role link in with the work done by Danny and Nicky Cowley?

“Ultimately, my job is to support the managers and all the staff to help maintain performance and to give everyone the clarity of what we are trying to achieve.

“The communication between the managers and the owners is really important; that generally goes through me.

“I’ll be working with Danny day-to-day in terms of what he needs and looking at what Danny needs to be successful. He’s busy with his coaching and managing the team.

“Ideally, we create a really good relationship, which has started well already. We’ve had a lot of meetings discussing what he wants and then we work with the owners of the Club to piece all of that together.”
