REPORT: TOWN EDT 4-1 WIGAN ATHLETIC

6 March 2020

Huddersfield Town’s Elite Development Team concluded their Premier League Cup campaign with a comprehensive 4-1 victory over Wigan Athletic.

Although elimination from the competition was already confirmed before the game, Town showed their character to come from behind to score four unanswered goals and earn their first three points of the Group.

Luke Daley, Jaheim Headley, Rekeil Pyke and Will McCamley were all on the score sheet for Danny Schofield’s side, who had gone behind inside five minutes courtesy of Charlie Jolley’s goal.

The visitors began the game on the front foot and did not have to wait only long for their opener. A nice through ball located the run of Jolley in behind the Town defence and he then gracefully chipped the ball over Giosue Bellagambi to put the Latics in front.

Jolley continued to pose a threat to the Young Terriers’ defence and almost doubled his tally for the afternoon when his effort at goal was well saved by Town ‘keeper Bellagambi.

The Wigan number nine then almost turned provider. He showed some neat footwork to work some space on the byline, but his ball across the face of goal was just too high for the head of Divin Baningime.

Towards the end of the opening half, Town were beginning to work their way back into proceedings and got themselves back on level terms courtesy of Daley. The Town full-back drove at the heart of the Wigan backline, before he worked some space onto his left foot and fired into the corner.

Following the equaliser, Town grew in confidence and began the second period in the ascendancy. Headley went close to putting the Young Terriers in front when his effort from the edge of the area was well saved by the ‘keeper.

Danny Schofield’s side continued to dominate and again went close to taking the lead when Will McCamley’s lay-off found Pyke, who was denied by the feet of James Aspinall.

Town were eventually rewarded for their dominance midway through the second half. Pyke’s initial effort was saved but the rebound fell kindly for Headley, who made no mistake in firing home.

The Young Terriers then doubled their advantage just seven minutes later. A swift counter-attack ended with Demeaco Duhaney finding Pyke inside the area. Town’s number nine showed good composure to shift the ball onto his right foot and finish into the corner.

The home side then put the icing on the cake in the final moments. A loose ball was pounced upon by McCamley and he then weaved his way past a couple of Wigan defenders before slotting into the corner.
