Huddersfield Town Manager Danny Cowley was proud of his squad as they were knocked out of the Emirates FA Cup by Southampton.

The Terriers created some strong chances but were unable to find a clinical edge, unlike opponents Southampton who scored through Will Smallbone and Jake Vokins.

When speaking after the game, Town’s Manager was proud of the performance that his side put in.

“We were proud of the players and their efforts.

“We had a game plan, I thought we defended with real concentration and discipline.

“I thought we had much more intensity in our defensive play which we’re pleased with off the back of New Year’s Day.

“We had the best chances in the game and probably three really good chances in the first half and then two good chances in the second and unfortunately just haven’t been able to take them.

“When you don’t take your chances against Premier League teams you end up getting on the wrong side of it. “

Prior to the game, Danny spoke about the challenge surrounding playing a Premier League team. He detailed how he thought the different style of play was beneficial.

“Southampton have an incredible athleticism and pace high up the pitch, so we knew we had to protect the space behind us.

“That meant we had to have really compact organised space in front and we did that really, really well.

“I felt that we frustrated their supporters and their players, we were able them to pick them off and play on the counter attack – we’ve got good players on the attack and they’ve got good pace at the top of the pitch.

“You look at our performance today and it was similar to the Brentford performance apart from us not being able to find the goal but there was certainly a lot of positives.

“This is definitely a way that we can play away from home against certain teams and we will need this style and this way in future weeks. “

It’s been no secret that Town have had games thick and fast over the Christmas period, and Danny gave his thoughts on what the squad can benefit from in the January transfer window.

“We need to get some fresh bodies in to help the group.

“It’s really important we do this, we’ve got a really committed group of players, we’re working really, really hard to improve the squad and compliment the players that we already have.

“There’s lots of players that we could have had in on 1 January, but we want the right players and everyone else wants the right players as well.

“I know the supporters want players in the building straight away and we’re no different from that, but they have to be the right players and we’re working really, really hard as a football club to get the right players and the right people to help us with the journey that’s in front of us.”
