Huddersfield Town helped a local boy celebrate 10 years of being cancer-free by gifting his name sake charity sponsorship of our new number 10, Chris Willock!

Ruddi Waterworth from Linthwaite was diagnosed with an aggressive form of cancer when he was six months old, undergoing numerous treatments including chemotherapy, radiotherapy and major surgery.

Ruddi’s fight paid off, and he has remained cancer-free for the past 10 years, undergoing regular checks and surgeries to address the side effects his treatments have left him with.

The family has been looking for ways to celebrate this milestone which they’ve called ‘Ruddi’s 10 Year Challenge’.

In 2011, Ruddi’s mum Ali set up a charity in his name, Ruddi’s Retreat, which sends children affected by cancer, life limiting conditions or bereavements, away with their family to caravans on the East Coast in Filey.

Before Town’s match against QPR on Saturday 8 February 2020, Ruddi and his father Craig were presented with a shirt signed by all the Terriers’ First Team, as well as meeting Town’s new number 10, Chris Willock, whom their charity will be sponsoring for the rest of the season.

Huddersfield Town’s Supporter Services Manager Robyn Kennerdale commented:

“When we saw the charity was looking for ways to celebrate Ruddi’s 10-year milestone we wanted to help, and it fit in perfectly that we’ve got a new number 10!

“As a Club we’re delighted to gift the sponsorship to Ruddi’s Retreat, and we hope it gives the charity more exposure for their fantastic work in helping children and their families going through difficult times.”

Ali Waterworth, Ruddi’s mum and founder of the charity, said:

“To find out we had been gifted sponsorship of the new number 10, Chris Willock, by the Club has left me absolutely speechless.

“Ruddi reaching his 10th year in remission is so special to us as a family and we are trying to make as many ‘10’ related memories for him as possible, so to be able to have this huge gift for not only him but for the charity is priceless.

“Thank you so much to Huddersfield Town from Ruddi, myself and all of us at Ruddi’s Retreat.”
