Town’s Under-19s win latest Central League fixture

- Town’s Under-19s beat Tranmere Rovers 3-1 away from home
- Goals from Kieran Phillips and Will McCamley earned the win
- First game for new Academy Coach, Danny Schofield

Huddersfield Town’s Under-19s emerged 3-1 victors against Tranmere Rovers in the Central League in Danny Schofield’s first match as U19s manager on Tuesday afternoon.

Kieran Phillips gave Schofield’s side the lead inside two minute before the hosts equalised in the early exchanges of the second half. Town responded well as Will McCamley restored their advantage and Phillips cemented the victory in stoppage time.

Town established their attacking intentions from the onset as they claimed an early lead inside the initial two minutes of the match. Scott High manipulated the ball to Ilounga Pata in an advanced position on the right-hand-side and the full-back’s precise cross located Phillips unmarked in the centre who clinically headed past the goalkeeper and into the roof of the net.

Phillips had the opportunity to double Town’s advantage and extend his personal tally for the afternoon when he was played in behind the Tranmere defence just three minutes after netting the opener. The Everton loanee lifted the ball over the onrushing goalkeeper but his effort deflected off the crossbar and fell behind for a goal kick.

The Young Terriers continued to control the proceeding and came agonisingly close in their search to cement their dominance before halftime when Dom Tear also rattled the woodwork. Ben Jackson received a perfectly weighted cross-field pass from Josh Austerfield and his drilled cut-back was met by Tear and struck with conviction against the post.

Town presented Tranmere their first significant opportunity following a lapse in concentration at the back in the early exchanges of the second half. Rovers intercepted a weak pass by Giosue Bellegambi as Town attempted to play out from the back, but he instantly made amends with a strong save to divert behind to safety.

Town’s inability to reflect their dominance on the scoreline proved costly as the hosts equalised against the run of play. A deep free kick towards the back post was headed across the face of goal and diverted in off the underside of the crossbar.

The two sides were on level terms for just four minutes before McCamley restored Town’s lead. Jackson swiftly switched the ball to the winger who cut inside onto his left foot and finished confidently into bottom right corner.

Town finally asserted their authority on the scoreline when Phillips slotted in his second of the match. Second half substitute Isaac Marriott fed the forward who finished underneath the ‘keeper to ensure Town returned to West Yorkshire with three points.
