Huddersfield Town’s Academy Coach Jon Worthington believes the overriding emotion is pride despite the penalty shootout loss to Newcastle United in the FA Youth Cup third round.

The Young Terriers were defeated 5-3 on penalties after the two sides could not be separated after 120 minutes of football.

Worthy was delighted with the display his players put in and felt they were unfortunate not to progress to the next round.

“It is very disappointing. I was proud of every single one of the lads tonight, they showcased what they can do and what they are about, but it is sickening for them really not to get the result.”

Town enjoyed the lion share of possession and created the better of the chances throughout the evening which pleased Worthy the most, on what was a huge night for the youngsters at the John Smith’s Stadium.

“I think they played with belief and confidence like I know they can and that is what I wanted them to do.

“They expressed themselves and that is all I can ask when they get an opportunity to play at the John Smith’s on a big occasion for those young players.”

Although the evening ended in cruel disappointment for Town’s youngest crop of players, Worthy is confident the group will recuperate ahead of the remainder of the season.

“You have the setbacks and it is how they bounce back from that but there are some fantastic characters in that dressing room, and they are a real strong group.

“Individually now they will probably kick on in their own pathways and go on to have good careers.”
