Young Terriers victorious in seven goal thriller

- Huddersfield Town U19s play latest Central League Cup game
- Four wins in the competition for the Young Terriers
- Goals from Sam Ompreon (3), Will McCamley and Jonas Ndombasi

Huddersfield Town’s Under-19s secured the fourth win of their Central League Cup campaign with a 5-2 victory over Walsall Reserves at Canalside.

A hat-trick from trialist Sam Ompreon alongside goals from Will McCamley and second-half substitute Jonas Ndombasi secured the win for Jon Worthington’s side.

Town began in the ascendancy and dominated the share of the ball in the early exchanges. The Young Terriers were rewarded for their bright start when trialist Ompreon opened the scoring after ten minutes. The striker latched onto left-back Jaheim Headley’s precise through ball, drove purposefully into the penalty area, before slotting underneath Walsall goalkeeper Joe O’Shaughnessy.

Seeking to increase their advantage, Town were presented with an excellent opportunity when the Saddlers defence misjudged the flight of a long ball over the top which Myles Bright had the tenacity to react to first, leaving the trailing defenders in his wake. Bright shot early across goal, but his effort was saved by the outstretched foot of O’Shaughnessy.

Town’s defence was called into action five minutes before half-time, but they protected their lead courtesy of an outstanding piece of defending by Ilounga Pata. Jayden Campbell fed through Jaden Forrester who burst into the area, but Pata came across from right-back to cover the danger, edging the striker off the ball and clearing upfield and away to safety.

The Young Terriers began the second half in similar fashion to how they started the match; doubling their advantage two minutes after the restart. Winger McCamley, operating in a central role after the restart, received the ball inside the area from Ompreom and cut inside onto his left foot, before firing in his second goal in as many matches for the U19s.

The visitors halved the arrears from the spot after Town goalkeeper Jacob Chapman brought down Saif Mukadam inside the area. Campbell stepped up and converted from the spot. Walsall completed their comeback when Forrester was played through on goal and slotted into the bottom corner.

Town reclaimed their lead however, as Ompreom netted his second of the afternoon. The trialist controlled Ernaldo Krasniqi’s searching ball over the top and slotted into the bottom left.

Town extended the their advantage beyond the reach of their opponents when second half substitutes Ndombasi capitalised on a mistake at the back to beat the goalkeeper at the near post, and Ompreom completed his hat-trick, firing in after Krasniqi’s header ricocheted off the bar.

The victory extends Town’s lead at the top of their Central League Cup group, adding to previous victories over Walsall, Grimsby Town and Salford City.
