Huddersfield Town’s Young Terriers winger Pat Jones was disappointed the side couldn’t find winner against Newcastle in the FA Youth Cup on Tuesday evening, but was pleased with the team performance.

The youngster scored the opener on the half hour mark, cutting inside onto his right foot and unleashing a powerful effort towards goal that was deflected on the way in.

After the visitors had levelled the score, he nearly found the net once again, but saw his strike at the start of the second half saved by the opposition ‘keeper.

The Welshman was ultimately left disappointed with the result after a penalty shootout but was pleased with the team’s performance on the night.

“We’re gutted, I don’t know what to say to be honest.

“The effort from the lads was really good, we probably should have won it in the 120 minutes.

“We’re all disappointed for not winning it, but we’re proud all the same for the performance.”

The game saw Jones return after six weeks out, something he admitted made him ever happier to get on the scoresheet.

“I loved it! I thought I should’ve scored another in the second half so I’m disappointed with myself, but that’s football!

“I enjoyed the experience, and it was really good to play here. I’ve missed football, the injury has not been easy but I’m back now and I’m loving it.”

The Young Terriers are now experienced in the field at playing academy sides from higher categories, something Jones recognises, and feels is a good marker for showing the group’s improvement recently.

“We play Cat 1 sides all the time and we’ve beaten some, embarrassed some, we can easily play against that sort of opposition.

“We’re a really good team, that’s why tonight was disappointing. We could’ve gone far in the competition, but overall, we gave a good account of ourselves in the 120 minutes.”
