Karlan Grant got off to a winning start as Huddersfield Town Manager after his side beat Oldham Athletic 1-0 after extra time in the First Round of the Football Manager Cup.

In truth, it was a dominant performance from Karlan’s Terriers who threatened all afternoon. However, they didn’t break the deadlock until the 94th minute.

In preparation for the inaugural Football Manager Cup, Karlan had been working closely with his players to adopt his tiki-taka style of football. After perfecting his set piece tactics and, of course, selecting himself upfront, he was ready to take on his first challenge.

In the match played at Hillsborough, a neutral location selected by Football Manager, Town dominated Oldham from the first minute. Good chances fell the way of the Terriers, but Gary Woods in the Oldham net was on hand to deny them.

Karlan made some vital changes as Town’s dominance continued. Chris Willock came on for Elias Kachunga midway through the second half and he ran riot. Within minutes of entering the pitch, the winger hit the post.

It wasn’t until extra-time, however, when the Terriers finally took the lead. Juninho Bacuna received the ball on the edge of the area and rifled a terrific effort past the ‘keeper.

Chances continued to fall with Emile Smith Rowe having a golden one from a superb breakaway. He received the ball five yards out after an excellent run and cross by Willock, but was unable to beat the ‘keeper.

There was a heart in the mouth moment, though, for Karlan as Oldham created a good chance of their own in the dying minutes of the game, but his Town side were able to see the game out and progress into the last 32 of the Football Manager Cup.

The draw for the Second Round of the competition is on Sunday 26 April 2020.
