Jon Worthington reviews the Under-17s latest Youth Alliance League game

- Jon Worthington happy with his youngster’s capacity to learn in match conditions
- Town Under-17s continue to develop with Jon Worthington

Jon Worthington’s Under-17s showcased their learning mentality in their latest Youth Alliance League game against Scunthorpe United.

The main objective for the Young Terriers was to stick to their principles and style of play, and after falling behind early on Worthy was pleased with how his side handled themselves to dominate the second half.

“The big learning point for us was to make sure that when we go down in games we continue to stick to our principles and our style of play,” explained Worthy.

“Last week against Mansfield I was disappointed we didn’t do that, this week we did and showed real character in the second half.

“I thought we dominated possession, created some really good chances, and on another day, we could’ve got back into the game.”

The game was also a good defensive test for the Young Terriers, with the defenders coming against older, more physical strikers.

“It was a good test for our centre-halves today up against two athletic Scunthorpe forwards.

“We failed to deal with that test early on, but once we got to grips with it and discussed it at half-time, we dealt with it well, and that’s a real positive for me – that shows great learning mentality.”

Up next for the Young Terriers is their second match in the Youth Alliance Cup, which will see an Under-18 side return to PPG Canalside to take on Oldham Athletic hoping to use the occasion to practise their full attacking capabilities and win the match.

“With that cup game the Under-18s will flip to a focus on the performance and obviously the result with it being a cup game.

“Therefore, the planning and preparation around this week will have that edge to it leading into that game, and we’ll look to carry over the positives from this week too.”
