Huddersfield Town Manager Danny Cowley says the team didn’t play with enough purpose today but feels he has learnt a lot from today which will improve the team going forward.

The Terriers were beaten 2-0 in his first game in charge of the Club and when speaking after, he explained that the players need to play with more energy and intensity to pick up points.

“I think we’re disappointed with the outcome for sure. I enjoyed the game I think I’ve learnt a lot from the game and that will help us moving forward.

“I think the scoreboard is definitely affecting the confidence and belief of not just the players, but probably of the whole stadium and that is to be expected after the difficult run the Club has been on.

“We need to try and build the players’ confidence and belief. The only way we can do that is by being really process driven, trying to really affect the players in terms of their understanding of the game plan, trying to find the game plan that sets them up for success first and foremost.

“Then trying to develop that understanding so that the players can then behave autonomously, then once we get to that point then they will start to find some confidence and belief, but that is the process.

“Unfortunately, that takes time, there’s no hiding place from that.”

Danny Cowley explained what his players should’ve done better against the Owls.

“Too often, we allowed Sheffield Wednesday to bank up and get 11 people behind the ball and it’s very difficult to attack teams when they have 11 people between the ball and the goal.

“We need to try and play with a bit more purpose and we always like to get our energy and intensity with our work without the ball. I didn’t think we played with enough aggression, in terms of our actions and our decision making.

“We certainly like to press it more aggressively than we did today, in terms of when you get a real aggression in you and your energy without the ball, it flows into your work with the ball and that’s what we’ll be working towards going forward.”

Despite losing his first game in charge, Town’s Manager learnt a lot from the game and detailed how we wants his side to play.

“We want to play on the front foot and play fast, attacking football. We want to play with energy and intensity and with purpose.

“The only way we’re going to get out of this is with some resilience and some grit and if we can do that with some good old-fashioned grit, we’ve got some good footballers, but without the determination, resilience and grit, it doesn’t matter how good of a footballer you are, you won’t get on the right side of competition.

“We know what it means to the people of Huddersfield and they’ve had a really difficult period. We want to play with heart, spirit and with fight.”
