REPORT: SOUTHAMPTON 1-1 TOWN

An entertaining stalemate at St Mary's as Town brought the curtain down on the Premier League season.

Nathan Redmond made it 1-0 with a peach shortly before half-time, only for Alex Pritchard to sign off Town's two-season stay in the top-flight with a valiant point.

Joel Coleman made his first ever Premier League start ahead of Jonas Lössl, with Tommy Smith (making his 200th Town appearance) and Jon Gorenc Stanković in for Erik Durm and Chris Löwe to round off the Terriers' squad alterations in Hampshire.

After early Southampton pressure, Town responded through Karlan Grant. Inventive play to find Isaac Mbenza released the pacey winger down the left, and the eventual cut-back was fired low into the arms of Angus Gunn by Town's striker.

Claims for a penalty were waved away by referee Lee Probert. Tommy Smith thought his rasping drive struck a Saints hand, but the right-back's appeals went unrewarded.

An end-to-end game brought with it another Town chance; Aaron Mooy, this time, was the man to try his luck, and having been found by Alex Pritchard's swinging pass, the Australian curled just wide of the target via a deflection.

The offside flag came to Town's rescue, as Southampton took their turn to initiate a chance. Shane Long had positioned himself beyond the defensive line, despite the ball falling to him once again via a wicked deflection; a quick reminder that Town had to be alert on all fronts.

Misjudgement in the final third continued to be a problem for the Saints. James Ward-Prowse looked to have had a perfect opportunity to shoot, instead opting to try and square for Nathan Redmond. That choice allowed Christopher Schindler to recover and prevent the home side from snatching the advantage.

Town was really playing with their tales up regardless of the meaningless context to the encounter. The hardy souls who'd made the trip to the South Coast - all of which provided with a complimentary yellow away shirt to commend the tremendous season-long support - nearly witnessed a first half opener for the Terriers, as Juninho Bacuna rifled inches over the cross-bar after a break started by Terence Kongolo's excellent interception.

Instead, it was Southampton who grabbed an opener five minutes before the break, courtesy of Nathan Redmond; and what a goal it was, too. Redmond drifted inside un-challenged and produced a stunning effort from range which sailed into the top corner beyond the out-stretched hand of Joel Coleman.

Saints nearly rubbed salt in the wounds as added time beckoned. It took a sensational last-ditch Christopher Schindler block to deny Danny Ings from finding the net around the penalty spot.

The hosts picked up where they left off. Ward-Prowse thundered off the bar as he shot in a kind amount of room on the edge of the area. Joel Coleman did well to get something on it to prevent the lead being doubled.

Instead of the lead being extended, the Terriers levelled through Alex Pritchard. Pritch nipped in to dispossess Saints goalkeeper Angus Gunn, and coolly slotted home into an empty net - to the delight of the raucous following in a corner of St Mary's.

Jan Bednarak produced a fine sliding block which denied Town's goalscorer from adding to his tally five minutes later. Town was really looking to press forward and end the season on a high.

Saints wouldn't let that come easily, however. Half-time substitute, Matt Targett, crossed invitingly along the deck, and none of his team-mates in the vicinity could convert, allowing Town to clear their lines. If a red and white shirt would've been a yard closer, a tap-in was inevitable.

But it wasn't converted, and time rolled with Town still playing with confidence. Jan Siewert introduced Matty Daly, and the youngster got yet more valuable First Team minutes under his belt at the highest level.

At the other end of the footballing spectrum is the largely experienced Danny Ings, who has a notorious history of finding the net. He failed to 70 minutes in, though, placing a header into Jon Gorenc Stanković's midrift rather than forcing Joel Coleman into a save from an acute angle when meeting Redmond's deep centre.

Mis-placed headers were becoming quite the narrative. Christopher Schindler met Alex Pritchard's corner at the far post, and forcefully headed downwards. The ball eventually bounced just over the bar, to Schindy's evident amazement.

Both sets of supporters were in unison to show appreciation to their respective group of players, as the last couple of minutes of the season petered out with the minimum of fuss; albeit after Charlie Austin missed the corner by a fraction.

Not a season that will live long in the memory; but the Premier League ride has been one that each and every person associated with Huddersfield Town wouldn't have changed for the world.
