First Team players were joined by local deaf and hard of hearing schoolchildren at PPG Canalside to learn basic British Sign Language, as part of a campaign to spread awareness of BSL during #SignLanguageWeek.

The youngsters from Newsome High School, who engage with a number of Town Foundation programmes, came down to Town’s PPG Canalside Training Ground and spent time with the players teaching them basic football related phrases.

Steve Mounié, Matty Daly, Danny Williams and First Team Coach Mark Hudson also learnt how to sign their names.

Signature are campaigning this week to raise awareness of British Sign Language and deaf awareness, whilst giving deaf people a platform to proudly promote their language and culture.

They hope that by the players learning some basic sign language that it may encourage others to consider learning as well.

First Team Coach Mark Hudson who attended the event truly believes in the message it sends to fans:

“For the Club it’s massively important and for myself as coaching staff, and players to come and meet these youngsters - to show that we can engage with them and make them feel valued.”

Robyn Kennerdale, Town’s Supporter Services Manager added:

“At the start of this season we launched our Terriers Together initiative, which highlights all the positive work we are doing at the Club and the Town Foundation to promote diversity and inclusion to really make the Club accessible for everybody.

“We’re so proud of our reputation as a community club, and events like this, just go to show how football really does bring people together.”
