Huddersfield Town Head Coach Jan Siewert was very happy with what he and his players got out of the Club’s pre-season training camp in Austria.

The Terriers returned to Kirchberg in Tirol to prepare for the 2019/20 Sky Bet Championship season and worked hard both on and off the pitch.

This is Jan Siewert’s first pre-season with Town and when speaking to #HTTV he detailed what he wanted to get out of it.

“First of all, I would say that it was massive to reinforce the team, which means have a good team understanding and an understanding for each other.

“Every player has good communication in the whole squad, which is massively important for me, and I got it out in the individual meetings we did.

“The second part, of course, was having matches that really challenged us. The training on the pitch was really great, I would say, and I really enjoyed working each day with the lads.

“All the tactical topics we wanted to put in were well achieved. It’s been a good week to be fair.”

During every pre-season there’s a large focus on getting the players up to match fitness, and rightly so, but for Siewert and his staff it was also important to reset the mindset after a difficult season last year.

“All of the players have been very honest, and all have been very open to the things we’ve been doing,” explained Town’s Head Coach.

“We all knew we wanted to get back the winning feeling and the best way to do it is winning matches.

“The commitment for what we want to do is totally there and I really enjoyed working with them for each second. For me it was important to tell the players that fight comes first and then the commitment to defend.

“The first two weeks were about the endurance side and the tactical side of defending and when you defend aggressively, you will attack aggressively, so this is the link.”

Town played against 2. Bundesliga sides Greuther Fürth and Hamburger SV in Austria – matches that really tested the Town players.

Siewert detailed how happy he was with the performances.

“I was very pleased with it to be fair. For me, it’s an important thing that the players understood the reason why I played these tough matches at the beginning and it’s because we’ll face difficult teams in the Championship.

“The intensity brought me the possibility to have a look at each player in detail because I saw the ones that really committed to fight against the ball and the ones that really wanted to defend and keep a clean sheet.”

With Town’s first game in the Sky Bet Championship just over three weeks away, the Head Coach explained what his plan are for the next part of pre-season.

“The next step is developing our game with the ball in the last third and in transition offensively because the other parts work quite well.

“Now we have to analyse the games over once more and go through the details.

“It’s important for me that there’s a chemistry between the players that work offensively together, so do we know when the full-back is overlapping, or do we know when the winger comes inside, this is made possible by having lots of games.

“We have four more games to go and then on the 5 August, I’m really looking forward to playing Derby.”
