During the 2018/19 campaign, Hamburger SV finished fourth in the 2. Bundesliga table narrowly missing out on an immediate return to the German top-flight.

Hamburger SV’s relegation in 2018 was the first time the Club had dropped out of the Bundesliga.

The Club finished one point below second-placed SC Paderborn 07 and third-placed FC Union Berlin after winning one of their last seven league games.

The Hamburger SV squad boasts a number of internationals that Town fans may recognise. Centre-backs David Bates and Kyriakos Papadopoulos have played for Scotland and Greece respectively, whilst attacking midfielder Aaron Hunt has been capped three times by Germany.

Two members of the German side’s squad have played against Huddersfield Town before! Goalkeeper Daniel Heuer Fernandes played against the Terriers for Darmstadt 98 last season and Austrian striker Lukas Hinterseer played against Town in 2016 for FC Ingolstadt.
