Town Head Coach Jan Siewert admitted that an early dismissal for Captain Tommy Smith had a large influence in the outcome of the contest on Tyneside as Newcastle United struck twice in seven second-half minutes to earn all three points.

Tommy was given his marching orders for a challenge on home debutant Miguel Almiron just 20 minutes in, which Siewert believes was the catalyst for a downturn in fortunes having made a bright start in the North East.

"It was definitely a big moment because we started the game well; It definitely changed the game. I don't find excuses. We've been working together for four weeks, and we haven't had a red card situation before. With one man less, it is harder to defend."

A second defeat of the season against the Magpies, the boss acknowledged that spirits were low despite spirited efforts on the training field in an attempt to spark an upturn in form.

"The team did not win since November. We have to continue to try and change this situation. I'm learning and the players are learning. It is a sombre dressing room now as the players are disappointed. We still stay positive, and we go on.

Over 2,000 Terriers made themselves heard up in the gods at one end of St James', and they don't have to wait long until their side are back in action as Wolves visit HD1 on Tuesday evening.

"I know how tough it is for our fans that we haven't won since November. I appreciate them so much. We've lost four games together and it's tough to take."
