Danny Cowley reserved special praise for his players after they came from behind to beat Blackburn Rovers.

The comeback was the Club’s first since April 2017 as second half goals from Jon Gorenc Stankovic and Steve Mounie gave Town all three points.

When speaking after the game, Danny explained how happy he was with the strong mentality his players showed against Rovers.

“If you want to be a successful team you have to win games in all different ways.

“We didn’t start the way we wanted to. We didn’t play with the intensity or the purpose that we wanted to in the first 10 minutes.

“They score and then it becomes really tough. At that point you have two choices; you go under or you come back fighting and credit to the players today because I thought they showed an amazing amount of resilience and a lot of grit.

“We tweaked the system and personnel to help the group and I think that did work, but it’s always the players and the way the players responded, not only from the first 10 minutes but also the Middlesbrough game, credit to them, I’m really proud of them.”

Both goals pleased Town’s Manager for different reasons; the first as it was from a set piece and the second for the individual quality shown by Mounie.

“It’s a brilliant delivery and Juninho has that quality; it was a brilliant ball and a great header.

“I’m so pleased for Jon, it’s an honest game football and Jon is as conscientious and as diligent a professional as you get.

“He was disappointed with the chance he missed against Middlesbrough, so for him to score today was just-rewards for the way he conducts himself. Football tends to do that for good people.

“Steve Mounie will get the headlines deservedly so, but the pressure from Lewis to create the chance was equally important. Lewis knew we’d miss Hoggy and he stepped up today. He leads by example and he’s getting better by the game.

“I’m pleased for Steve because he works and conducts himself in an exemplary way. He only had one thought in mind, and it was a brilliant finish; great for him and the team.”

Danny Cowley also praised his players’ fitness after another hard-working display at the John Smith’s Stadium.

“It’s been a very tough Christmas period with games coming thick and fast, particularly with the wafer-thin squad we have.

“You can’t underestimate Blackburn in this run of games who made six or seven changes per game. We had to roll them out and go again and again.

“I thought the players deserve a lot of credit for their resolve and physical fitness, but also their mentality; that’s what wins you football match in this period.”
