Talented young defender commits his future to Town

- Mustapha Olagunju signs his first professional contract
- 17-year-old defender pens deal until at least 2021
- Comments from Academy Manager Leigh Bromby

Academy defender Mustapha Olagunju has signed his first professional contract at Huddersfield Town!

The 17-year-old centre back has made great progress since joining the Club from London-based XYZ Academy in the summer of 2018 and has today committed his future to the Terriers until June 2021.

The Club also has the option to extend that contract until the summer of 2022.

Standing at 6’ 2” tall, the Plumstead-born defender started 31 games for the Under-17 side in his inaugural year with the Terriers, earning his break into Dean Whitehead’s Under-19s. He finished the campaign with 12 appearances for the older age group.

An aggressive, front-foot defender who is comfortable on the ball, ‘Muz’ follows closely in the footsteps of Under-19 teammate Josh Austerfield in signing professional terms.

Huddersfield Town’s Academy Manager Leigh Bromby commented:

“Mustapha thoroughly deserves his professional contract for many reasons. His progression as a footballer in his first 12 months at Huddersfield Town has been very impressive, thanks in no small part to his determination and attitude daily in training.

“’Muz’ is still a relative novice to a professional football setup, so he has lots more to learn. All the coaches are really looking forward to continuing their work with him; we’re excited by his potential.”

Leigh added:

“Mustapha’s progression is a great first example of how our relatively new Academy setup works.

“One of the groups we target when recruiting Under-17s are grassroots players like Mustapha; someone who had never been at a professional club before, but with real raw potential. These players need to work with our coaches, but the potential is there.”
