Huddersfield Town defender Erik Durm explained to #HTTV how one conversation with now-Liverpool Manager Jürgen Klopp completely changed his career.
Erik joined Borussia Dortmund from Mainz in 2012 as a striker - playing in that position for 14 years – however, one talk with Klopp not only changed the way he played football but changed his life forever.
Within a year of making the transition to becoming a defender, Erik had played against Real Madrid, made his debut in the Bundesliga and won the FIFA World Cup with Germany.
“Jürgen had a big influence on me; he was the first one who told me to start in a defending position because I was a striker before,” explained Erik.
“He came into training and told me ‘I want you to be a defender, left or right-back’, so he had a big influence on my career.
“I’m very happy that he made this solution and that he saw that I could play in this position.”
Erik adapted to his new role very quickly after working with both Jürgen Klopp and David Wagner, before being moved into the First Team.
After three weeks of working with the now-Liverpool Manager, the Germany international was playing in the Bundesliga.
The full-back went into detail about how Klopp helped him to reach his potential.
“He used to talk a lot with me and he always told me: ‘I believe in you, show your confidence and go on the pitch and try your best.’
“It’s always good when a coach believes in you and you know that even when you make a mistake, because it can happen.
“This was key at that time; that he was always in my back and gave me the confidence I needed in my game.”
