Defender looks ahead to Manchester City game

Huddersfield Town defender Christopher Schindler has said the Terriers will have to “put everything” into Sunday’s Premier League game against Manchester City to get a result.

The German, who picked up both the Players’ Player and Player of the Year awards at the Club’s annual awards ceremony in April, spoke ahead of Town’s trip to the Etihad this weekend.

Schindler said that playing the Champions on their own pitch will be a different story to when the two sides met at the John Smith’s Stadium in November:

“I think it’s a different story if we play away. With our supporters in the back this stadium (the John Smith’s Stadium) can be really uncomfortable for opponents; even for Manchester City, we saw that. We were close to a sensation in a way, but unfortunately we got no points out of this game. Of course we can take a lot of things out of this game for Sunday and try and perform as well as we can and see what happens.”

The defender has played in 34 of Town’s 35 league matches this season, and accepted that Manchester City will pose a major threat to the Terriers on Sunday:

“I think it’s impossible to defend for 90 minutes against this team. They have a goal scoring record which is just unbelievable, and there are other teams who have struggled against them. We shouldn’t think too much about each individual player and just accept that we also need a kind of luck in this game to stay in the game as long as we can.”

Town has scored six goals from set pieces this season, and Schindler explained how the Terriers could cause Pep Guardiola’s team problems from dead-ball situations:

“I think set pieces are their only real weakness, where they are not so good. We seem to be quite dangerous from set pieces against them, and this is something we’ll try to get. Corners, free kicks, we make it as hard as we can for them. But we know at home they are unbelievably strong.”

Manchester City has only lost once at the Etihad in the Premier League all season, however Schlinder expressed that Town will do everything to make Sunday’s game as difficult as possible for the Champions.

“We know what’s waiting for us but we have to put everything into making it as uncomfortable as possible for them to stay in the game as long as we can.”
