One year ago today (29 May 2017), Huddersfield Town won promotion to the Premier League for the first time.

The Terriers beat Reading at Wembley Stadium in front of 76,682 people on penalties.

David Wagner’s side had to great chances to take the lead in the opening 10 minutes of the match but neither Michael Hefele or Izzy Brown could hit the target.

Despite numerous efforts to open to scoring, the match finished 0-0 after 120 minutes, which meant it was a second successive Sky Bet Championship Play-Off penalty shoot-out for Town, who beat Sheffield Wednesday on spot-kicks in the Semi-Final.

The penalty shoot-out had twists and turns with Michael Hefele missing Town’s second penalty. However, Liam Moore put Reading’s fourth over the bar before Danny Ward expertly saved Jordan Obita’s spot-kick.

That meant Christopher Schindler had the chance to fire Town into the top-flight for the first time in 45 years. The centre-back stepped up and placed his penalty into the bottom corner, sealing promotion to the Premier League.

Chris Löwe, Nahki Wells and Aaron Mooy also scored for Town in the shoot-out.
