Terriers to compete in the Interwetten Cup in Essen

- Town to compete in Interwetten Cup in Essen
- Rot-Weiss Essen, Werder Bremen and Real Betis competing
- One-day tournament on Saturday 21 July 2018

David Wagner’s First Team will head to Germany on Saturday 21 July 2018 to compete in the Interwetten Cup as part of preparations for the 2018/19 Premier League campaign.

The Terriers will compete against hosts Rot-Weiss Essen, Bundesliga side SV Werder Bremen and Spanish La Liga team Real Betis in the international one-day tournament, which will start at 3pm UK time (4pm local).

The Interwetten Cup will take place at Stadium Essen, which has a capacity of 20,000. The one-day tournament will be played in a cup format with two semi-finals, a match for third place and a final, with each game being played over 45 minutes. The semi-final matches will be decided in a draw.

Tickets for the competition are now on sale; Town supporters have been assigned block E1! CLICK HERE to purchase your tickets.

Host Rot-Weiss Essen plays in the German fourth tier, the Regionalliga West. This tournament could mark the first time that Town faces the team, depending on the draw.

However, the Terriers have faced the other two opponents in recent history.

Bundesliga side SV Werder Bremen, who finished 11th in the German top tier in 2017/18, was an opponent for David Wagner’s Terriers in the first pre-season camp in Austria ahead of the Championship promotion season of 2016/17, with the two teams playing out a goalless draw in Zell-am-Ziller.

Spaniards Real Betis qualified for the Europa League with a great sixth placed finish in La Liga in 2017/18. Town actually hosted Betis in a pre-season friendly during Mark Robins’ tenure with the Club ahead of the 2013/14 campaign, losing 4-2 at the John Smith’s Stadium despite goals from strikers James Vaughan and Martin Paterson.

Here’s a list of Town’s confirmed First Team’s friendlies:
