Young Terriers improve on the ball in friendly against York City

- Under-17s building relationships on the pitch
- Young Terriers keep the ball better in the final third
- Academy Manager on Town U17s’ final friendly

Town’s Under-17s show further signs of development and understanding during a pre-season friendly against York City at PPG Canalside on Saturday 4 August 2018.

The Young Terriers have been working furiously with Academy Manager Leigh Bromby and other members of coaching staff to understand the fundamentals of the Terriers Identity and further steps were shown in the Under-17s’ final friendly ahead of the 2018/19 season.

Town’s Academy Manager was particularly impressed with the way the youngsters kept the ball in the final third against York, as this was highlighted as one of the main points to improve on following previous games.

“They’ve picked up what we do with the ball really well. We’ve worked a lot on playing out from the back but have struggled keeping the ball in the final third, but they did they well today.

“They had more opportunities to do that because they were the better team, which we wanted to be the case.

“The relationships they’re building on the pitch are still developing and do take time but there’s been some promising signs.

“They’re getting the idea and that’s what we work on, so when you see it in a game, you walk away happy.”

The Young Terriers also came away from the game with a new feeling, one that will enhance their beliefs in the brand new system.

“We try to be different with the Under-17s and not get them to focus on results because games are more of a challenge,” said Leigh Bromby.

“But it was good for them to have that winning feeling and for the game to give them more confidence.

“We had more of the ball today, which was planned, so we could work on more possession based skills – it worked well today.”

During pre-season the youngsters have played a number of different sides that all possessed different strengths and ‘Brombs’ explained how that will give the Under-17s a better understanding of the new style of play.

“We’ve had five to six weeks to piece together the Terriers Identity with lads who are totally new to the Football Club, so providing them with different tests during each of the friendlies has really benefitted them.

“We will look to throw more men’s games into their schedules now because I think they’ve worked really well during pre-season.”
