Academy Manager Bromby sees team put learning into practise

- Town Under-17s take on Manchester City
- Young Terriers put defensive learnings in practise
- Bromby happy with improvement as game progressed

Town’s new Under-17 group faced one of the world’s elite at Academy level in their final pre-season test in a game designed to test their organisation off-the-ball.

Having enjoyed plenty of possession in the weekend win over York City, Academy Manager Leigh Bromby sent his side into action against Manchester City on Tuesday afternoon to see how the Young Terriers applied what they have learned in training recently.

“Having worked hard on the basics of the ‘Terriers Identity’ since the start of pre-season, we’ve been working on our defensive organisation for the last week; the balance of the team, covering and moving as a unit,” Bromby told htafc.com.

“Bear in mind that these players have still only been together for one month. The organisation, communication and defending as a unit is still new to them.

“It’s important we try to line up the games with the coaching program, so we can see how the players apply what they’ve learned in training in game situations.

“York gave us a real physical test at the weekend – their team included Under-19s and Under-18s – and the players overcame that challenge to enjoy a lot of the ball. Today we wanted the players to have to defend; something we knew would be the case against Manchester City. They were the perfect team to play today.”

Leigh continued:

“They have a lot of good players and it made for the perfect challenge for our players. We adapted as the game progressed and the second-half was a big improvement.

“The challenge is for us to play similar games come Christmas time and to see a big improvement.”

Town’s EDT side is in action at Mickleover Sports on Wednesday evening, with the Under-17s getting their Youth Alliance season under way against Doncaster Rovers at PPG Canalside on Saturday morning.
