Town U23s secure 2-0 victory over Brentford

- Huddersfield Town U23s beat Brentford ‘B’
- Dom Tear scores both goals for Town
- Highlights on HTTV tomorrow

Huddersfield Town U23s ran out victorious on Tuesday afternoon as they welcomed Brentford’s ‘B’ side to PPG Canalside for a behind-closed-doors game with young midfielder Dom Tear on target twice for the Terriers.

Mark Hudson took the team for this game as further progression to his coaching development with regular U23s manager Frankie Bunn taking a backseat on the bench along with fellow Professional Development Coach Leigh Bromby.

The notable inclusions in the Town side included First Team players Kasey Palmer, Abdelhamid Sabiri, Joe Lolley and Joel Coleman all starting with the first three playing the first-half as well as a first U23s appearance for 17-year-old central defender Oran Thompson.

The Brentford ‘B’ side included prospects such as former Celtic and Scotland U19 International midfielder Theo Archibald, Captain Zain Westbrooke - who made his first team debut for the Bees as a second-half substitute last season - and Denmark U20 international Justin Shaibu.

The game began and on his birthday, Abdelhamid Sabiri was first to go close on four minutes as he forced a good low save out of Jared Thompson in the Brentford goal from a powerful driven free-kick.

Town kept a good defensive shape throughout and following some good pressing by the attacking unit created the chance that would turn out be the eventual opening goal. Joe Lolley picked the ball up wide on the left and driving forward cut the ball back to Dom Tear who made no mistake from close range to give Town the lead sixteen minutes in.

Kasey Palmer nearly doubled Town’s lead late in the first-half as he picked the ball up on the edge of the area and fired a rasping drive towards goal that deflected off a Brentford defender before creeping narrowly wide of the mark.

The initial chance from Palmer served as a warning with Town going on to grab their second goal of the game moments later. Some neat passing in the build-up from Town saw Joe Lolley pick up the ball on the right with the attacker cutting inside and curling a rasping effort towards the far post. The effort could only be parried by Thompson in the Brentford goal as Dom Tear was on hand to dispatch the rebound from close range for his and Town’s second goal.

Town withdrew first-team players Joe Lolley, Kasey Palmer and Abdelhamid Sabiri at the interval with the second-half petering out as a contest with Town retaining the ball well and working themselves into some neat attacking spaces on the counter. Brentford looked for a way back into the game late on as Bradley Clayton forced a good stop from Joel Coleman in but Hudson’s side were able to hold out for the clean sheet and the 2-0 win.
