Huddersfield Town’s Under-23s side was knocked out of the Premier League Cup by Brighton & Hove Albion in the round of 16 after a 3-1 defeat at the AMEX Elite Football Performance Centre.

Frankie Bunn’s starting eleven included Sean Scannell and Tareiq Holmes-Dennis to help the pair regain match fitness after missing out on First Team action.

Brighton & Hove Albion started the game the strongest and had two good chances just after the 10 minute mark. Cox’s dangerous cross just evaded Tighe, before the prior hit a curling effort that glanced wide after hitting the outside of the post.

In the 17th minutes the Category 1 Academy side took the lead; Dallison struck the post before Hutchinson’s deflected strike went past Town ‘keeper Luke Coddington.

Just seven minutes later it was 2-0. This time Hutchinson turned into the creator playing a superb ball to Davies, who slotted in coolly from close range.

Brighton continued to create chances; Tighe drew a fantastic save out of Luke Coddington before a thunderous strike from range by Tilley rattled the crossbar.

Just before half-time in the 41st minute it was three. Tilley again involved, playing a defence splitting pass through to Collar, who slotted the ball past the on-rushing Coddington.

It took Town until the 44th minute to have its first meaningful effort on goal when Captain Regan Booty drew a good low save out of Albion ‘keeper Ankergren.

Despite the scoreline, Frankie Bunn’s youngsters had the better of the second half. In the 58th minute Sam Warde, who scored in the Premier League Cup against West Brom, forced Ankergren into another low save.

Two minutes later the 37 year-old goalkeeper was on hand again to deny Rarmani Edmonds-Green with a brilliant reactions save to deny the defender from a right angle.

Five minutes from time, Sam Warde scored the goal the Development Squad’s second half performance warranted.

The Irishman fired a low drive past the impressive Ankregren to reduce the Terriers to a two goal deficit.

With just minutes remaining midfielder Olly Dyson thought he’d made it 3-2. He went one-on-one with Ankregen and clipped a shot past the onrushing ‘keeper, however, young defender Hornby-Forbes raced back to clear the ball on the line.
