REPORT: CARDIFF CITY 1-4 TOWN U23s

3 April 2017

Back-to-back victories for Frankie Bunn’s side

- Town U23s win 4-1 at Cardiff City
- Back-to-back victories for the young Terriers
- Coughlan, Booty, O'Brien & Warde the scorers

Huddersfield Town’s Under-23 side recorded a second successive 4-1 victory in the Professional Development League on Monday evening, defeating host Cardiff City in Wales.

The young Terriers put four past the Bluebirds after falling behind early in the second-half, securing back-to-back victories for the first time since September to keep chances of finishing in the all-important Play-Off spots alive.

Senior Professional Development Coach Frankie Bunn’s side featured no overage players and a switch in formation to 4-3-3 on the evening.

Regular central midfielders Regan Booty and Lewis O’Brien were joined in the engine room by 18 year-old trialist Kenny Aileru from London, who was making his second appearance for the Club.

Irish attacker Ronan Coughlan, pictured above, also made a welcome return to the line-up after a long injury absence, making only his second start of the campaign wide on the left of the attacking trio.

There were no goals in the opening 45 minutes and although Town conceded possession to Cardiff, Bunn’s side created several very good chances. Effective counter-attacking led to very presentable opportunities for Jack Boyle (twice), Jordan Williams and Olly Dyson, but none of the Town players could capitalise.

At the other end, the Town defenders blocked Cardiff’s efforts well – but could do nothing to stop James Waite putting the hosts in front after he turned in the penalty area in the 55th minute.

Thankfully, Bunn’s men reacted brilliantly. Coughlan levelled the score only three minutes later, finishing another good counter for his second goal in as many appearances since his return.

On the hour mark, a superb corner routine led to a second as skipper Booty curled home in expert fashion to put Town ahead for the first time.

Fellow midfielder O’Brien put the game beyond doubt with nine minutes to go, tucking the ball away nicely, before substitute Sam Warde netted from another smart corner; heading home with two minutes to spare.

Highlights of the game will appear on #HTTV this week!
