U23 PREMIER LEAGUE CUP DRAW MADE

6 September 2016

Games to start at end of September

- Under-23 Premier League Cup draw made
- HTAFC in Group G with Liverpool FC, West Brom & Ipswich Town
- Six games to be played in new group stage

Huddersfield Town’s group draw in the 2016/17 Under-23 Premier League Cup has been confirmed.

Frankie Bunn’s Development Squad has been placed in Group G of the new-look competition alongside Category 1 Academies Liverpool FC, West Bromwich Albion and fellow Category 2 side Ipswich Town.

Previously the Premier League Cup has been a straight knockout competition in each round, but this season a group stage has been introduced.

32 teams have been split into eight groups of four, with six matches being played per side. After all the matches have been completed, the top two from each group will progress to the Round of 16 knockout stage.

As per the Professional Development League games, teams are able to play three overage outfield players as well as an overage goalkeeper if they desire.

The exact dates and venues for each of Town’s six games will be confirmed in due course, with the first expected to be in late September.

Town made the semi-final of the competition last season, losing a penalty shoot-out to Hull City after a goalless draw over 120 minutes.

Bunn’s young Terriers are next in action on Thursday afternoon, when they host Bristol City at the John Smith’s Stadium in a 2pm kick-off.

The team comes into the game on the back of a 1-0 home victory over Nottingham Forest at PPG Canalside on Sunday.
