- Mooy will face UAE next for Australia

Huddersfield Town midfielder Aaron Mooy earned his 17th Australian cap this afternoon starting in the Socceroos 2-0 win over Iraq in a World Cup qualifier.

Mooy started in the middle of midfield for Ange Postecoglou’s side and was involved for their second goal.

Town’s midfielder whipped over a corner which was helped on by Mark Millgan before Tomi Juric tapped home from close range.

Before Australia took the lead Mooy rattled the crossbar from the edge of the area before drawing good saves out of Iraq ‘keeper Hamed.

The result meant Australia got off to a winning start in Group B and will hope to progress to the next stage of qualifying, with the ultimate aim to reach the finals of the 2018 World Cup tournament in Russia.

Aaron will travel with the Socceroos squad for their next qualifier against UAE on Monday 5 September in Dubai.

Mooy, who is currently on loan from Manchester City, will return to England in time for Town’s Sky Bet Championship match at Leeds United on Saturday 10 September.
